Top 10: Movies of the 90s

This has been the most difficult list by far. Probably because the decade in which I have seen the most movies is the 90s, but I also think this was an incredible decade for film. The names I left of were really good movies. Great depth and a great top 5.

Honorble Mention: JFK, Casino, Saving Private Ryan, Silence of the Lambs, Trainspotting, Fight Club, Braveheart, Fargo, Tombstone, Forest Gump, A River Runs Through It, American Beauty, Matrix, Resevoir Dogs, and Seven (I cannot believe these movies missed out. They all could be on, I love them all).

#10 Usual Suspects (95)- I still think there are people out there that have not seen this movie and what a shame that is. One of the best stories I have seen written on film and with out a doubt one of the best endings. A then pretty unkown Spacey delivers a wonderful performance. This movie will keep your interest from the second it starts to the very end.

#9 Good WIll Hunting (97)- I think I am going to get some flack for having this on my list but at the time I thought that Matt Damon and Ben Affleck were going to be the two biggest stars in Hollywood. One turned out to be a pretty damn good the other sucks. These guys wrote a wonderful script, and with the help of Robin Williams in his best role to date, they delivered a great movie.

#8 American History X (98)- I dont think Ed Norton gets enough credit for this role. He probably put on 30 lbs of muscle for the role. This role is as good as it gets for acting. He was nominated for an oscar for his performance but did not win. This is a pretty good story with a chilling and powerful performance that I just love.

#7 Unforgiven (92)- Westerns are really a dying breed of movie. This one is the best one to come out in the last twenty years. Clint Eastwood is one of the best all-time and Gene Hackman might be better than him. I know a lot of people here Western and get turned off, but this is a wonderful film about a man that tries to go straight but the one thing he is really good at is being a cowboy. Wonderful film.

#6 Big Lebowski (98)- I am kind of torn as to whether this movie should be on this list. If I said my favorite movies well then yes it would be, but this is my best of list. I still think it deserves the cut. I saw this movie twice before liking it and now I like better every time I see it and I have probably seen it 100 times. This movie is hysterical and truly was one of the best films of the 90s.

#5 LA Confidential (97) - This like Usual Suspects is such an amazing story. This is one of those movies that you watch and you are like wow how did someone think of all of that. With twists and turns a wonderful plot and a great cast to back it all up. This is a movie that you will definately enjoy.

#4 Shawshank Redemption (94)- If Stand By Me is #1 on my list of Stephen King stories this has to be 1A. What a fantastic story about...well who doesnt know what this movie is about? Everyone has seen this and almost everyone would have it in there top 5 90s movies this is a no brainer.

#3 Schindlers List (94)- Its hard to make a movie about one of the most shameful things in the history of mankind, but Stephen Spielberg did and he did it very well. One of the most powerful movies of my time that had me in tears. Neeson, Kingsley, and Fiennes all have performances of a lifetime. Fiennes' character, Amon Goeth, is one of the best all times. See my villain blog.

#2 Goodfellas (90)- Dances with Wolves is a good movie but for Kevin Costner to beat Martin Scorscese for best director and that movie to win the Oscar is why I cant watch those shows. This film will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout. Scorscesce gives us a look inside the Mafia that had never been seen before. Pesci, De Niro, Liota are all amazing. If you havent seen this...do it!

#1 Pulp Fiction (94)- Damn 94 was a good year for movies. Quentin Tarentino is one of the best at his craft and this was his coming out party. He revived the careers of Jackson and Travolta and to a certain extent Walken and Willis. From the script to the acting to the best dialogue I have ever seen written in a movie I love this film.

Lets hear your lists.

So its the best dialog you have ever seen? Where did you first see this movie? Hong Kong? All subtitles? Wow that really would of sucked to have read this whole movie and then to have horrible Asian voiceovers keep fucking up your train of thought. I think that would of ruined the film for me, to be quite frank. Man I would of walked out of that shit vowing never to watch another movie in Hong Kong or look at Asians the same way ever again. But I have to commend you! You stuck through it. I think the real reason you hung in there is because in 94 you knew that one day you would blog about absolutely nothing. And to not even know what blogging was at that age, is fucking bone chilling if you ask me. Wow and to think today you finally get to tell the world how the pulp fiction dialog looked. Fucking bravo big tasty, fucking bravo!

94' was one great year Ftown. A couple I feel that should be added to your list are Boyz N The Hood and The Program. I'm surprised you left these off the list. One basically tells the story of what it was like growing up in Marshall, while the other gives you an inside look at Marshall football.

Not too shabby, Chubby Glass. I think between the actual list and the honorable mentions, you've covered the best of the best of the 1990s. Obviously, personal preferences will give everyone a different top 10, but those are most of the films that deserve consideration. Every film on your top 10 is a great film.

Personally, I think Unforgiven may be the best film of that decade, from top to bottom. Writing, directing, performances, visual images, forboding imagery, etc.

The other 90's films that would have a good shot at my list are:

La Vita e' Bella (Life is Beautiful) - amazing performance by Roberto Benigni really drove home the heartbreaking and immensley creative story

Being John Malkovich - it gets points for being like no other film ever before

Glengarry Glen Ross - if you like dialogue, this is the film masterpiece of the master David Mamet

This Is My Father - a truly great story and excellent performances all around

Eyes Wide Shut - again, I know you don't like filmmakers who don't tell you exactly what their movie is about or exactly how each scene fits into a coherent story, but this is Kubrick at his best. Amazing story with amazingly surreal visual events and you have to decide what is real, what is imagined and what really happened. He doesn't wrap it up into a neat little package and make you feel better. He just throws an amazing series of experiences at you and leaves you to deal with it. You end up as confused and rattled as the characters in the film. It's breathtaking, I assure you.

Lost Highway - see above review of Eyes Wide Shut and insert "Lynch" in place of "Kubrick"

Rushmore - a masterpiece that will never get its due

The Sixth Sense - yes, we all know the story now, but if you could go back to the first time you saw it and experience that again, you'd give it the props, g.

C$$ first of all I dont understand the first half of your post and yes I did know sitting in the theatre with my parents watching Pulp Fiction that I would be talking about nearly 15 years later in this wonderful blog.

iGrunes those are too very good movies. Menace to Society and Boyz in the Hood are too really good films that deserve mention somewhere in the best 90s movie though I dont see them breaking into the top 10.

Timmay first of all its not that i cannot appreciate a kubrick or Lynch film, in fact i am fan of a lot of there work, Kubrick especially. However, I dont hold these films in such high regard because personally I think both directors are a little pretentious. They are good filmmakers, but often there movies are like so many indie films out there that just try to cram your head with cool characters, and a plot line that has no sequence, or stunning visuals, that often you leave and dont know what to think. I know both of these guys are talented guys and when watching a movie and I only like or understand half of it I still could give it my reccomendation, it just wont make the top 10. Have to agree with you on Rushmore. My Blog on Tuesday was going to be a little ode to Bill Murray and this is one of my favorite Murray performances. I am a big fan of Wes Anderson. Sixth Sense was also a good call. I have still only seen this movie once and it is becuase i dont think it could ever be as good watching it again. I loved it and I like a lot of other M. Night Shamaylan films. It should definately get mentioned in the honorble mention not sure about top 10. I will put Lost Highway, Life is Beautiful (Interesting note Benighni beat out Norton for best actor in that role), and This is My Father, on the movie rental list.

I get the impression that C$'s rambling would be very similar to asian dialog....or that he dislikes asians altogether.

I find the movie reports on this blog insightful, and knowing the author makes that even more impressive. Then again, when you grow up in Marshall, you have nothing better to do than see every movie made for three decades.

My Top Ten for the 90's (without the fancy descriptions, or director/writer details):

10. Boyz in the Hood
9. Being John Malkovich (crazily new and creative)
8. Forrest Gump
7. Schindler's List
6. Saving Private Ryan
5. Shawshank Redemption
4. Pulp Fiction
3. Silence of the Lambs
2. Unforgiven
1. Scent of a Woman

Misses narrowly, Titanic (just what it took to make this film is incredible) Jurassic Park (funny or not, this film made more money than most of the above in the box office), JFK, Fargo, and American History X. THe Big Lebowski sucked, I just cannot get through it...DUDE. I never saw Usual Suspects, will rent it soon....

I will never be understood, I like to compare my wit with the movie Rushmore, a masterpiece that will never get its do. But understand this all you bloggotastical wonders, I love asians. I love them dearly. As a matter of fact I owe my life to a pack of them. Its a long story, it should only be told over a steamy pint of saki and fortune cookies that all read "douchbags are among us, tip toe on eggshells!" the point is 94 was a hell of a year not only for movies, but the emergance of clothing lines such as cross colors, hypercolor, and spandex aka biker shorts aka the only thing matt would wear everyday for 12 years. you couldnt peel this kid out of his sheen leggings. man the old days, too be able to go about your daily life and the only thing seperating a full on erection and the rest of the world is a few pieces of luminesant strands of rubber. fuck i miss 94!

Hi there, I think your blog may be having browser compatibility issues.

When I look at your site in Safari, it looks fine however, if opening in IE, it has some overlapping issues.
I simply wanted to give you a quick heads up! Aside from that, excellent blog!
