Brett Being Brett

Like just about everyone yesterday, I was sitting in front of the TV watching football. I have been one of the biggest Brett haters to ever live, but watching the 40 year old yesterday was pretty impressive. I know everyone wants to jump on board of the sinking ship and say that he costs the Vikings the game, but I certainly did not see that. Yes his season ended with an interception, just like it has in his last two stops, but the guy was pretty much brilliant for the rest of the day. The Saints were the first team all year to consistently beat the Vikings line, and put Brett on his back. Some of those shots were brutal, but he kept on going out there and picking up first downs and leading touchdown drives even though every skill player on the team kept putting the ball on the turf. The game should have been out of reach well before that final drive that he will no doubt have to live with forever. That last play he seemed to have plenty of options. Hit the back out of the backfield for 7 yards, take off running for close to the same, or just throw the ball away and give your kicker a 2/10 shot at hitting a game winning 55 yard field goal. Brett chose none of these options and tried threading the needle to his go to receiver. The pass gets picked off, and the Minnesota miracle died where it started. No multiple super bowls for Brett Favre, no first Superbowl for the Vikings, and Packer fans everywhere can breath a collective sigh of relief.

It would be easy to jump on Favre's back after the loss, but he did more than enough to lead that team to victory. They opened the game with a dominate run game, but fumbles and a decision by the coaching staff to throw 65% of the time, put the game on Brett's shoulders. He answered the call all game until that last drive. In all reality what made him one of the top five greatest players ever to play the game, probably cost him a chance at winning 3 or 4 Superbowl's. He had no fear to make any throw at any time, and that made him great, but as Packer, Jets, and now Viking fans know, it also will break your heart. I would like to see him comeback, just not for my team, as I don't think there is any doubt he can still play the game at a high level. But just know you have to live with the good and the bad, when you have Brett Favre at the helm.

Conan Classy as Hell

Conans last show was amazing especially coming back from the last commercial break. His words were heartfelt and non-bias. He got choked up for a minute but came through actually giving props to NBC for his 20 years with the network. If you didnt watch it, you should find it, I think it speaks volumes to Conans character and why he is so respected in the industry. Man I really cant wait for his next move, I think it is going to be special. He ends the show with Will Ferrel, ZZ Top, Beck, Max and some others playing Free Bird. Will calls Conan down to get the axe and they rock out. It was pretty poetic and really special how they ended it. I couldn't of imagined a better way to say "how you like me know!!" Check it out on your local internets.

Jake Wood Doin Work

A while ago I posted a link to the blog of one of the most impressive Badgers of all time. Jake Wood was a backup lineman, who finished school, and became a Marine Sniper. His blog detailed life over in Afghanistan and Iraq, and it was simply amazing. I saw TK posted on his blog a link to donate to Jake's relief effort in Haiti, it looks like he is doing quite well in his efforts. He raised close to 100k, and is currently leading a team down there administering as much help as humanly possible. This guy is simply amazing. When I see this it is hard not to think that I am just a big pile of steaming hot shit.

Health Reform Takes a Hit

As many of you probably already know the President's new Health Care Initiative, took a pretty big hit, when GOPer Scott Brown took critical Senate seat in Massachusets, earlier this week. I don't really have a strong opinion either way on the health care reform bill. I am curious as to what anyone that may read this believes. I dont really have a forum to talk politics so I do it here, even though many of the readers of this blog could care less.

My thoughts are this country needs some sort of health care reform. Go get a quote from any insurance company and you will quickly learn they have taken advantage of our current system. At the very least, there needs to be a way in which everyone can afford some type of health coverage, I truly believe the Govt has a huge role in not only protecting our personal freedoms, and or liberty, but also protecting us from being fucked over by big business that capitalism has created. More importantly I believe everyone has a basic right for some sort of health coverage, even if that is on a lower scale for people that cannot afford a premium coverage or does not have a job that covers insurance costs.

With that being said, I truly don't have a good grasp of how many people in this country are without some sort of health care. It is my understanding that most public hospitals have to treat patients weather they have insurance or not. It may not be the best treatment, but if you get shot in a inner city without any insurance, chances are you are going to go to a hospital, you will live, and you will be released. Now that doesnt do anything for you if those injuries keep you from ever working again, or help you pay for your hospital bills, but the govt already has programs for a lot of those situations. I guess what I am saying is how much reform do we really need? Is it possible to modify our current system, instead of a complete overhaul? I really have no answers to this question, but I plan on getting an better understanding of our current health care system and what is not working.

What is known is the people of Massachusets have spoken, and what they said is the democrats health care plan is not what the people are looking for. If a Democrat can win a Senate race in Massachusets, I am unsure this bill will ever pass. Maybe that is a good thing and maybe that is a bad thing. This bill still could go through if the democrats can gain enough support in the House and send this bill to the President, however I dont see any evidence that can happen. What it should do is force the democrats to change the bill a bit to get more Republicans on board. I was unclear as to whether the Republicans were just using stall tactics because they didnt want Obama to quickly push a bill like this through, spending more money, when the nation faces its biggest deficits ever. Or if they simple didnt believe the bill was going to be effective. What I am pretty sure of, is a majority of people in this country believe that our current health care system is flawed, and some sort of change needs to take place.

I am also curious as to what this election means to the next year of President Obama's term. He took a hit this week. The GOP picked up some very strong veto power against the Democratic Agenda. I honestly thought that when Obama was elected the Nation was ready for a massive overhaul, and that is what he has tried to deliver, and I dont think there is any doubting that. What I didnt see happening was his approval ratings plummeting and him losing a lot of support to make these changes that just a year and half ago people were begging for. I guess in the big scheme of things money talks, and people want everything, while not wanting to pay for it. They want a health care program run by the government but dont want to pay for it. Obviously the plans of President Obama were going to be expensive. New ways of raising revenues were going to have to be made. It seems to me the people wanted a change of leadership, but more or less were happy with the things were going as long as they were lead out of a recession and they didnt have to pay more in tax. I am curious as to why people believe Govt can be run both ways? In the simplest of terms, if you want the govt to provide you a service, you are going to have to pay for it, in most cases a lot for it. Your kids are going to have to pay for it.

Like I said before, I am in the middle when it comes to health care reform, I can see benefits on both sides. I am against government spending, but I am not nieve to think there arent a lot of ways for this govt to raise money, so the cost cannot be the only thing you look at. Does it provide something that all Americans can use and most often need? If so I believe the Senate would be making a big mistake if they let this bill die, because it probably will never gain this much steam again. I am pretty coservative in my ideology as I am sure many of you know, but it frustrates me to know end when the Govt is gridlocked. I was a big part of this nation that supported President Obama and I thought he was the type of leader that could make changes in this country. I stil believe he can, but I am starting to have some doubts. I believe the President needs to figure out a way to bring both sides closer together, or we will never see any real change. The dichotomy of people in this country seems to be growing larger and larger which is making it nearly impossible for the government to get anything done.

I Am With Coco

I am not sure how this slipped through butt cracks here at DWI (actually I do, I was hoping Tasty would cover this story)  but if you haven't heard Conan quit The Tonight Show, because Leno is a huge fart faced indian giver. I also found this article pretty hilarious because NBC did they same thing to Leno just seven months after he took the reins from Johnny. NBC threaten to ditch the Chin and bring in the Gap (Letterman). Well Leno was all pissed off about it and threatened to quit. How soon people forget how it feels to be kicked in stomach only to double over and get kicked from behind in the balls. I would like to go on record and say I really dislike Leno, he isnt funny and brought nothing unique to TTS. Getting rid of that dumb ass was the best thing that ever happened to that show. Conan brought originality and vision to bring that show back to its relevance it once had when Carson was pimping it. So fuck you Leno and NBC, if it wasnt for the Community and the Office, I would delete your channel from my TV's.
I really hope Coco goes to Fox. And I love the above image by the way. Thinking about getting tattood on my back.

Hilarity

I believe that the Kissing Suzy Kolber site is the best sports blog out there right now. I mean if you are looking for all laughs and little in terms of real journalism covering sports. Which nowadays is really all I can stand with how terrible sites like ESPN.com have gotten. I typically go there a few times a week to check out the fantasy/sex mailbag and some of the rants that are done by current NFL players, coaches, and fans. Below is a link to speech Rex Ryan gave his team Monday morning coming off his big victory over the weekend. It is definitely worth the look, and while you are there, save the link to the site. You will not be disappointed.

I Was Afraid of This

Link

It looks like a lot some of the "shovel" ready projects that were green lit in the first stimulus package are not producing the jobs that were expected. The construction industry seems to be a bit behind the rest of the economy in terms of the recession, and the worst times may still be ahead.

I agree with many of you that have said on here that green industry and the development of "clean" energy is going to be the next big wave of new jobs in this country. I do have a feeling that many of these new jobs are going to be focused towards people with degrees, so if you are without a job, I would suggest looking at going back to school right now. I would assume the construction industry is one of the leading industries for people lacking a college degree in this country. Those people may be without jobs for a long time if not forever. As Sage Francis so elegantly stated, "the rich get richer, until the poor get educated".

Another Best Movie List

I have much respect for Roger Ebert as a film critic. More often than not we share a similar taste for movies. So I was suprised when our top 10 lists were so different. So I figured I would post his list in case anyone is in search of help updating there Netflix Queue. I am dying to see Hurt Locker.

Best of 09 Fail

Found this over at With Leather. College Humor put together some of the best "Fail" moments off 09. Not sure they were all from last year, but none the less it is the best fail compilation I have ever seen. I gurantee it will put a smile on your face.

Justin Townes Earle

I thought I'd share a cheerful pick-me-up from Justin Townes Earle. My wife and I, along with a group of friends, are going to his show at the High Noon Saloon in Madison on February 26, so I've been studying the material, so to speak. If you like authentic, traditional country / Americana type music, the show will be more than worth the $12 price of admission. This guy isn't exactly obsure anymore, just about 3 years into his recording career. His latest album, "Midnight at the Movies," is being named to many "best of 2009" lists, received a 4-star review from Rolling Stone, and he was nominated for three Americana Awards, winning Emerging Artist of the Year. He has a little crossover appeal as well, as "Midnight at the Movies" is approaching the Top 40 on the Indie charts.

This track is from his first release, the 2007 six-song EP titled "Yuma." This is the title track from the EP, and a real feel-good story, true to the old-timey country tradition. Enjoy.

Nic Cage as Everyone

I am not sure why I find this funny, but I guess if you photo shop Nic Cage face on any character it is pretty damn cool. I am a huge Nic Cage fan *cough cough dismissive wank motion* and he is such a good actor I could see him pulling off any of these characters. Here is my favorite.
