Rick Roll'd

I really want to pull this stunt off. This is one of the worst songs in history and I have played it in a few bar juke boxes just to piss people off. It looks like this has a similar effect.

If you really want to annoy people, just wear a Duke jersey and explain that Coach K is actually a leader who just happens to coach basketball, when he's not cussing at a player's mother over his decision to leave for the draft.

TK,

True Duke players do not leave early, they finish school get a degree under the leadership of the Great Coach K and then a few go on to play in the NBA. You have seen the commercial thousands of kids will go pro every year, most of them not in basketball. When Myles has Wojo knocking on your door, you surely wont turn him away...

Yeah, it's pretty easy for those spoiled brat rich punks to cry foul when a kid from a poor background seizes the financial opportunity of a lifetime.

If Myles has Wojo at the door, I wouldn't turn him away. Especially if he can get us the same cash payment deal that Magette got. Duke doesn't even have to forfeit any games when that stuff happens, unlike other programs, so no harm no foul. If Wojo comes a-calling, I'm sure there will be some other good options to consider. I've only two guys that went to Duke - both of them are raging douchebags. That's something to consider.

Not sure what spoiled brat rich punks you are referring to, but I personally believe if you should be able to go pro right out of high school if you wish. But if you decide you want to go to college, for everything that has to offer, then you should have to stay at least 3 years. Similar to the rules that baseball uses. I dont think you can force kids to go to college and then be upset when they leave after a year. College certainly isnt for everyone, and I would guess if you are coming from a poor up bringing, and you have the talent to play hoops at the top level, going to class is the furthest thing on your mind. I dont know why Coach has a problem with the one and done rule, besides it has kind of hurt him, with recruiting. He has had some pretty good players that were one and done before the rule changed. Including Maggete and Deng. He will probably have another one next year in Irving. 2 and done max.

My post earlier was an attempt at sarcasm, I think Coach K is a good coach, I dont know him as a person so I cannot comment on what type of leader he is and I hate it when people say he does it the right way, because what coach does it differently? Maybe 2 or 3 in the country. I just like the fact that he wins games, and a lot of them.

Obviously, he's a winner and that's why there is so much ass-kissing. There are coaches at hundreds of schools at all divisions of the NCAA who are role models for young men, encourage and lead them to getting an education and learning important life lessons. Why does Coach K get held up as a golden god of character? Not because of his character, but because he WINS.

It's like Tiger, can't we watch a guy be a great golfer and recognize that he is a great golfer without pretending that it also makes him a great human being?

There's so much desire in this culture for the nice guy to get ahead in very shallow and materialistic ways (making money, winning, being the elite in a profession), but the reality is that most nice guys don't get ahead in those ways.

You don't become the hall of fame coach by being a great, attentive husband and father around the house whenever they need you, or by spending your time "developing young men" who are great kids but aren't elite basketball recruits. You become a HOF coach by putting that job #1 in your life and focusing all of your "leadership" skills upon young men who just happen to be McDonald's All-Americans and game-winners and have a world of opportunity in front of them whether you "lead" them or not. Some people use their leadership skills to lead and mentor poor kids with no athletic ability and little opportunity out of the goodness of their hearts, but that's not sexy, so let's talk about what a great guy Coach K is.

"I'm a leader who happens to use my leadership skills in a way that garners me fame, approval, a 7 figure salary, plus $50,000 a pop for appearances, and I only "lead" kids who are elite athletes. Now bend down and kiss my ass."

Like with Tiger, I don't really hate Coach K as much as I hate the culture of dunces that celebrate them as heroes for working hard for their own success and fame and fortune and then act surprised when they turn out to be the type of self-centered, pleasure-seeking, me-first assholes who typically become the best at some narrow, competitive function.

The reference to the rich brats was about the hate mail that Brand got after leaving Duke from a bunch of rich Dukeshbag students telling him he wasn't worthy of Duke and he disrespected the tradition of Duke by, you know, providing for his family's financial security, something they will never know anything about.

I guess what I'm saying is that people worship raw success, which is natural, but they want to fool themselves into thinking they are appreciating something loftier, so they turn the objects of their success-worship into false heroes of character. I like to poke holes in that, if and when I can.

It's like Lance Armstrong, I really admire him for his talent and his unparalleled drive and motivation to overcome cancer and reach the pinnacle of a very physically demanding sport. He also does give back an awful lot to the cause. That being said, he's kind of a dick. So be it, I get that, I'm still a fan.

TK,

Really good post, and I really couldn't agree more. After the game they were talking to Bobby Knight and I had to turn the TV off. I respect the guy a lot, but he was slamming guys like Calipari because he wins with guys that dont graduate. Well that is what he is paid to do win games. I bet his players think of him as a great guy, I bet there are a bunch of kids that got degrees under him that never would have, and I bet most of all he is a decent man. But he does what he has to do to win, yet he gets slammed and Coach K gets plaques with his name on it. There is such a fine line between perception and reality especially at the coaching level. All these guys are great becuase they will go the extra mile to get the most of these kids, not because they are great leaders and role models for todays youth.

I love your Tiger Woods analogy and it can hold true with a lot of the best athletes of all time. Kobe, Jordan, Babe Ruth, Micheal Irvin, Pete Rose, and the list could go on and on. These guys were great becuase they put what they were best at over everything else in there lives, yet everyone wants to think that because they are good and do commercials that they are high character role models. That is rarely the case. Lets just applaud them for doing what they do best and not make them something they are not. There are only a few Tim Tebow's in the world (and quite frankly thank god). I personally have no problem with a guy being known just for his accomplishments, and not because he was a good man. I dont care that Pete Rose gambled on baseball, or the fact that Jordan was a complete degenerate, all I care about is they could perform at a level I could only dream about. I know one person that will agree with me.
