Motivational Speech

I am posting this because I always want to have a link of this close. I have seen this over 20 times and it never gets old. Plus, watching Jimmy V gets me excited for college basketball. I will have a little college basketball preview for later in the week.

I always take Jimmy V. with a grain of salt. If he never had cancer, he would have been just another coach of questionable character. He was an inspiring guy, a salesman of the highest order. But the greatness that is attributed to him by Dick "Let Me Smoke Jimmy V's Cock" Vitale and others is astounding.

Several of Jimmy's players admitted to accepting money for point-shaving.

There were 700+ NCAA violations against his players for selling their game tickets, selling their shoes, getting extra benefits, etc. This got them barred from the 1990 NCAA tournament. Thanks, Jimmy!!

His own school found that he and his staff violated rules regarding player eligibility - he was rolling with morons - one with a 400 on his SAT. He was also the athletic director, so he could cheat even worse on eligibility, so they had to fire him from that job so they could keep an eye on him before finally shitcanning him as coach.

In ten years of coaching at NC St, he had three players graduate. Fuckin' THREE. In TEN years! Three.

None of this was ever Jimmy's fault, just ask him. He was a slick ass used car salesman who recruited a bunch of mouth breathing, low character morons to try to win games, cheated and lied to keep them eligible, and when they finally got busted for it, Jimmy let the boys take the rap and he sailed on as a bullshit hero.

Aside from giving a good speech, he represented everything that has ever been wrong with college athletics.

How Vitale can ride Bobby Knight's jock for graduating his players, demanding discipline, never cheating in recruiting, etc., and then slobber down on Jimmy's slimy cock is mind-boggling to me.

Yeah, wear sneakers for Coaches Against Cancer. I hear you can get a great deal on the shoes from Jimmy's players. They get them for free, they sell them to you. Tell 'em Jimmy sent ya, just don't tell the NCAA because Jimmy will say he had no idea and it's not his fault he cheated to get a bunch of low lifes into his program.

If you can't win playing by the rules, "Don't give up. Don't ever give up." If ya ain't cheatin', ya ain't tryin'.

I wanted to point out that I am not a Jimmy V fan and I have never followed his teams. I did not know about his coaching violations or his horrible graduation rates, but coaches with questionable character is pretty much the norm. Hell my favorite coach Mike Krzyzewski, known for his character, can be seen selling himself to the highest bidder for any commercial that will come his way. I agree TK that Jimmy V would not be well known if it wasnt for the foundation named after him, that is one of the best at raising money for cancer. All I was pointing out by the video is that is no doubt one of the most inspirational speeches I have ever seen, as he was literally so sick they did not think he was going to be able to attend the ESPYs, and to show my excitement that college basketball is right around the corner. I guess I should have put Bo doing the Hambone or something, but I saw that link on a blog I frequent. I have gotten the hint though that sentiment will be wasted on the readers and fellow contribuitors to DWI.

I'm not saying you can't be inspired or find something moving. I'm just saying I don't want to see a young grasshopper led astray by a snake oil salesman.

I'm just saying, for example, that Terry Hoeppner, the football coach at Indiana who died of cancer within the past year, was the REAL DEAL. He was a great coach and leader of young men. He played by the rules and was turning around a miserable program and winning by the rules. He was an inspiring guy.

Sadly, like Jimmy V., he died before his time. You're never going to see a nationally televised motivational speech from Terry, though. That's because what he did NOT do was make himself the center of attention and parade his sick ass one more time in front of the cameras to get the last taste of the spotlight that Jimmy craved. He didn't do a shitload of interviews about cancer and how tough he was in fighting it. He wanted to talk about Indiana football and where it was going and how he wished he would be able to continue with the kids, how he felt like he was letting them down when he wasn't healthy enough to be there, etc.

Fuck Jimmy.

In the ass.

With a broken bottle.

See you in Columbus. Don't forget your "Don't ever give up" t-shirt.

Hard to argue with any of your points, several coaches have had battles with cancer, and the Hoepner example is a good one because he died very tragically. I dont put Jimmy V as the face of cancer awareness, for that I would probably put Lance Armstrong, who no doubt also has some moral issues. I guess you can be inspired by the words or the man, and to me his words were inspiring if you nothing about the man. Where as Lance or Jon Lester would be inspirations due to there perceverance. Either way, I had no idea you hatred for Jimmy V ran so deep. I know nothing really about him except for that speech, and all I can say is if he came to my house with a ramble like that, I would be hard pressed not to play ball for him.

That's why I'd be there to kick the everloving shit out of his cancerous ass, run him out of Deerfield on a rail and send you to Bo Ryan.
