I've been honored to be asked by Tasty and See-No to contribute to this most extraordinary blog, so what better way to celebrate my first post than with some most extraordinary Ishy freestyles. This here is Minneapolis natives Eyedea and Slug on the Sway & Tech Wake Up Show in 2002, I believe.
In my opinion, freestyling has become somewhat of a lost art. It can tell you a lot about an MC and how they think and approach hip-hop. Clearly, these two know how to have fun with it. And no doubt Eyedea is the best that ever did it. Just take a peek inside his trophy case sometime.
Check out the reactions on the faces of Sway & Tech throughout the session. And keep and ear out for Eyedea to drop some Ish bombs.
Well, I'll keep it short because the videos pretty much rhyme for themselves. Slater.

K-DEEEEEEZ, welcome welcome welcome. I am super excited about you joining DWI. Love your first post. I think it exemplifies everything you are going to bring to this blog. A totally different vision of what hip hop can be! God I miss E&A and old sluggo. You are right Eyedea is in a league of his own when it comes to freestyln and hip hop for that matter. Great Vids, I am really looking forward to many more post from you. I think DWI just gained 2 great contributes that will offer a lot more than the tales of drunken weekends and even drunker posts. So let me be the first to welcome you to the blog, I can wait to see what kind of crazy ish you dig up.
I have been blessed by moving to Minneapolis and having one of the greatest music scenes at my fingertips. Eyedea & Abilities played last Friday up here, I couldn't make it, but my friends said it was amazing. I went to a Vast Aire show on a whim about a month ago, he is def. worth checking out if you haven't already!
Rhymesayers are turning out some great music. Have you hear of Doomtree? You should check them out if not. I enjoy Cecil Otter the most out of the crew, and they have a pretty chill girl named Dessa on their tracks too.
Yeah, I was surprised by Doomtree, too. I caught my first tase in Madison, about 4 years back, when POS opened for Atmosphere. I really recommend his 2 solo albums. He's very political and socially conscious, and with Doomtree on the beats you get some very innovative Ish.
Onto Eyedea. He is no doubt a top finisher on my list of MCs; in company with Aesop, Sage, J-Live (as far as turn of the century MCs go). Shit, I might even hand him the first place trophy. He has a quality and knowledge every other MC severely lacks. C$ and I saw, quote, Eyedea & Abilities, unquote, at the High Noon two years back. I couldn't have been more excited to see the show, until I realized he misinformed us and ended up performing with his rock group, Carbon Carosel or Face Candy or whatever it is (actually, i believe, on their CD they have a live track from that show). But anyways, I was open to it at first but it ended up a mess and the crowd started leaving. I kinda felt bad but it was clear that no one was expecting this crazy Ish. After Eyedea realized he was loosing everyone, he plucked some random dude outta the crowd and ended up freestyle battling him for the rest of the night. The show never recovered.
Long story short, i truly respect what Eyedea is trying to do as of late: expanding his mind and talents. hes a great guitarist. he's also putting his name behind fresh midwest MCs, trying to get em a start. But I really miss E&A and hope a new album is forthcoming.
NOTE: i talked to Eyedea at a show, shit, a long time ago, before the E&A album. I asked him what i can expect, and he told me about the album and how its a 50/50 DJ/MC collabo, nothing like anything anyones ever heard before and that its only the beginning of some true innovation into hip-hop. He was right, but I really hope that beginning hasn't been begat. Ratatattat! Later.
