Most Memorable Death Scenes

Here is a pretty cool link of the top movie death scenes of all time. LINK I have always felt the death scenes are usually the most powerful part of movie cinema, or at least what I usually remember the most after a movie is over. Here are a few of my most memorable movie death sequences. Please post a link to your favorites or most memorable.

It looks like the focus is on shocking, violent deaths. While they certainly are a big draw at the cinema, and sometimes they actually move the story along in a legitimate way, to me they are always a momentary "holy shit" reaction, but nothing that is really a lasting piece of artistic expression that affects me in any emotional way. Honestly, if you've seen or read Old Yeller, try to tell me that any of those deaths on the linked list are more memorable to you than how you felt when Old Yeller died. The only one of those in that Top 50 list that I recall being particularly moving was the death of Sgt. Elias in Platoon. That was heavy.

With that concept in mind, I think the most moving and unusually creative death scene I've ever seen was in Lars and the Real Girl, a movie about a young man with a psychological disorder which leads him to believe that a life-like doll is a real, live girlfriend. I won't say anymore or link a clip because you really should just see the movie.

The earthly death of Jesus Christ in the Passion of the Christ was a pretty amazing depiction.

What about the death of the father in Life is Beautiful? I am not ashamed to admit that I... know people who cried at that.

In terms of a violent death scene that really was necessary to drive the story and really had a realistic, emotional punch to it: The murder scene from American History X that explains how Ed Norton ended up in prison.

I have never read the book but i would agree that Old Yeller has one of the most important death scenes of all time. The list was actually pretty lame, it could have been a lot better, but still there were some good clips that I forgot all about.

I guess you could throw Mufasa and Bambi's mom onto the list as well. I think there are too Dennis Hopper's character in True Romance. I thought when Leo was capped in Departed the movie took an unexpected turn and I really wasnt ready for that.

Lars and the Real Girl is a great movie. It is as original of a movie I have seen in some time. Most people I have met hated it and i have suggested it a few times and people have told me it was an awful movie. Ryan Gosling is not quite in Leo's category but I think he is darn close. He is a great actor and takes great scripts. Half Nelson was one of my favorites from a couple years ago.

Also great call on American History X, I remember talking about that with my friends forever after seeing that movie. It was shocking but I think completely neccassary to set the feel of the movie. Most of the deaths I pick just make me laugh when i look back at them now, against the one with Anton from No Country, what a fucking bad ass way to introduce a character.

Thinking about it now Coen Bros are fucking awesome at shooting death scenes. No Country, Big Lebowski, Millers Crossing, Raising Arizona, Fargo, and even Burn After Reading all have memorable death scenes.

If somebody didn't like Lars and the Real Girl, I would recommend that they spend their lives watching "awesome" movies like Armageddon and Rocky V, and I know where they can get a great deal on some Nickelback cds.
